Threat intelligence and OSINT

Last reviewed 2026-10-01General guidance, not legal or career advice

Threat assessment, intelligence analyst, OSINT investigator and blockchain investigations roles at companies and analytics firms.

What the work is

Companies, security firms and analytics vendors hire analysts to spot threats to people, sites and brands, investigate online activity using open sources (OSINT), assess threats against executives or employees, and trace cryptocurrency for investigations. Some vendors that sell these tools to agencies also hire former investigators to train customers and support cases.

How your LE experience translates

Intelligence-led policing, crime analysis, threat assessment, social media and open-source investigations, and writing for decision-makers all carry over. Fusion center, task force and cyber or financial crimes experience is especially relevant.

What employers usually ask for

Postings often ask for analytical writing, comfort with data tools, and sometimes a security clearance or the ability to get one. Many roles are remote or hybrid.

Getting started

  • Build a short, cleaned-up writing sample: a one-page threat or intelligence summary.
  • Note any tool training you have had (records systems, analytics, OSINT tools) on your résumé.
