Fraud, AML and compliance

Last reviewed 2026-10-01General guidance, not legal or career advice

Fraud investigator, anti-money-laundering (AML) investigator, compliance and trust-and-safety roles at banks, fintechs and online platforms.

What the work is

  • Fraud investigators at banks, payment companies and retailers investigate account takeovers, scams, check and card fraud.
  • AML / financial crimes investigators review alerts on suspicious activity and write the reports banks file with regulators.
  • Trust and safety teams at online platforms investigate abuse, exploitation and scams, and often work with law enforcement requests.

How your LE experience translates

Financial crimes, fraud, narcotics and organized crime cases, plus interviewing and report writing, map well. You already know how investigators on the other side use the reports these teams write.

What employers usually ask for

Postings often ask for investigation experience, strong writing, comfort with data and spreadsheets, and sometimes certifications such as CAMS or CFE (examples employers list). Many roles are remote.

Getting started

  • Learn the vocabulary: KYC, SAR, typologies, transaction monitoring.
  • Lead with case examples where you followed money or documents.
