Emergency management

Last reviewed 2026-10-01General guidance, not legal or career advice

Emergency management, preparedness, continuity and crisis management roles in local government, healthcare, universities and companies.

What the work is

Emergency managers plan for disasters and major incidents, run exercises, coordinate during an emergency from an emergency operations center, and help organizations recover. Hospitals, universities, utilities and large companies have similar preparedness and business-continuity roles.

How your LE experience translates

Incident command, critical incident and special event planning, working across agencies, and staying calm under pressure are the core of the job. Officers who worked special events, SWAT or crisis teams, or homeland security assignments often have directly relevant experience.

What employers usually ask for

Postings often ask for incident command training (for example the FEMA ICS courses), planning and exercise experience, and strong writing. Some ask for professional certifications.

Getting started

  • Collect your ICS/NIMS training records and any after-action reports you wrote (cleaned up).
