Insurance SIU and claims investigation

Last reviewed 2026-10-01General guidance, not legal or career advice

Special Investigations Unit (SIU) and fraud investigator roles at insurers, health plans and third-party administrators.

What the work is

Insurers' Special Investigations Units look into claims that may be fraudulent: auto, property, workers' compensation, life and health. Investigators review files, interview claimants and witnesses (in person or by phone), take recorded statements, work with surveillance vendors, and refer cases to state fraud bureaus or prosecutors. Health plans have similar "fraud, waste and abuse" teams.

How your LE experience translates

Interviewing, statement taking, report writing, evidence handling and knowing how a case is built for prosecution are exactly what SIU work needs. Investigators and detectives move over directly; many postings say law enforcement experience is preferred.

What employers usually ask for

Postings often ask for investigation experience, strong writing, comfort with claims and case software, and sometimes a state adjuster license or an anti-fraud certification (for example CIFI or CFE, examples employers list). Field roles cover a territory; desk roles are often remote.

Getting started

  • Check whether your state requires an adjuster or SIU license, and whether the employer helps you get it.
  • Learn the basics of the line of insurance you're applying for (auto, workers' comp, health).
