Officers
How we protect officers' identity (privacy, two-step login, resume controls)
Officers are the reason this site exists, so your safety comes first. Employers and agencies can't search, browse or list officers. An employer only ever sees an application you send to its job.
What employers see
Until you apply, an employer sees nothing about you. On each Apply form you choose, for that application only:
| Detail | Choices | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Your name | full name, your display name (alias) or initials | set under Privacy (initially: initials) |
| Current agency | shared only if you tick it | not shared |
| City/state where you live | shared only if you tick it | your Privacy setting |
| Street address | not collected and never shared | — |
| shared only if you tick it; otherwise the employer contacts you through site messages | not shared | |
| Qualifications (certifications, specialties, education, languages from your career profile) | shared only if you tick it | not shared |
| Military service | shared only if you tick it | not shared |
| Phone, resume, cover note | up to you | — |
| Verified-officer status (status, years of service, date last verified) | always shared: it's what makes you a verified applicant | — |
Set your display name, home city/state and your defaults under My officer account → Privacy. Our reviewers still see your legal name and agency to verify you, but employers don't unless you share them.
Tip: if you do share your email and it includes your full name, consider applying from an address that doesn't. Without your email, the employer writes to you through the application's message thread, and we email you a short notice (without the message text).
Being found by employers (optional)
Employers can't browse officers unless you opt in to officer search. Even then they see only an anonymous card with the fields you choose, never your name, agency, email or phone, and your current agency is blocked automatically. Pause or opt out any time.
Who opened my application?
My officer account → Who opened my applications lists each time an employer opened your application or downloaded your resume, with the date and company.
Withdrawing and automatic deletion
- Withdraw any application from My officer account. The employer loses access at once, and your resume, contact details and shared details are deleted from it. (A copy the employer already downloaded is under its own control.)
- Applications, resumes and the view log are deleted automatically a while after the job closes, or after a year at most. Exact periods are in the Privacy Policy. Resume files are overwritten before they're deleted, and they're always stored encrypted.
Two-step login
Your account shows your verified-officer status and your applications, so two-step login is required for officer accounts. Right after you sign up (or the next time you log in) we take you to Two-step login. You need a free authenticator app, a QR code to scan and 10 recovery codes to save. It takes about 2 minutes. Until it's on you can still log in, confirm your email, change account settings, and read help or contact support, but you can't upload verification documents, see full listings or apply. We email you whenever a recovery code is used. See Two-factor login and recovery codes.
Lost your phone and your recovery codes? Contact support. We'll reset two-step login only after re-checking your identity, for example with a short live video call where you show your photo ID, or by calling your agency at its official number. We never ask you to email or upload ID photos for this. Every reset is logged, and you'll get an email.
State officer-privacy laws
Some states (for example New Jersey's Daniel's Law) protect officers' home addresses. We don't ask for your street address, never publish addresses, and don't pass one to employers. At most they see the city/state you choose to share. Questions? Contact support.
